Overview
Introduced early in 2011 the Z9 was a classic Reebok running machine that excelled in many areas, and it was the first choice for many home gyms. Now in 2016 Reebok have released the ZR9 that promises to bring the same high quality of the Z10 but with some fresh updated features.

Initial cost
To get my hands on this treadmill, I am afraid that I had to pay full price from my local retailer.
Usually when it comes to running machines, you can often pick up a bargain as a manufacturer is looking to clear old stock. Check out our monthly best buy table to find the best price vs performance based on your budget.
Delivery and setup
When this running machine was delivered the two men looked a bit worn out just getting it down the driveway and into my spare room.
I can’t blame them as this machine is heavy, much heavier than a typical Reebok (85kgs vs a typical 60kgs). Don’t pick this running machine up, even if you have a van big enough it’s worth the delivery cost just to save the potential back ache.
Setup was simple as the treadmill came 90% pre-assembled.
I didn’t have to worry about fitting any fiddly LCD displays or wires as you simply raise the frame bolt into position and fold out the arms. It took about 30 minutes to put together and part of that time was making sure that it was all in the right place.
Features
Once the machine was set up it was time to power it on and see how it runs. The first point that I realised was how quiet it was, it seems all the extra weight has gone to good effect with a high quality motor packed underneath the frame.
Aesthetically, the Reebok ZR9 is a very nice looking treadmill, mainly black with hints of red and white.
Because of the simple colour scheme, I think it would fit in with the majority of households.
It has a 2 horsepower motor for continuous speed but allows bursts of up to 3 horsepower, giving you enough speed to complete sets of sprints if required. It has to rank as one of the quietest machines that we have tested here at Gym Tech Review, a really nice bonus for those who need such a machine due to their living arrangements.
The LCD screen is also a very nice blue with white numbers, giving you a nice contrast and simple to read numbers. I am a glasses wearer, and I was able to see all of the dials and numbers clear enough without having to revert to putting them on during setup.
What I like about this treadmill is how well laid out all the major functions are. The majority of the time you will be switching between various speeds and incline.
What Reebok have done with the ZR9 is focus in these two specific areas and have all of the possible speed and incline settings at the touch of a button. There are 8 speeds buttons and 7 include buttons meaning that you don’t have to spend time pressing a plus or minus button to get the exact setting you want.
The Reebok ZR9 does feature a set of nicely laid out programmes ranging from weight loss right up to mountain climb.
Small yet simple diagrams quickly show me what I can typically expect as I progress through my workout which makes selecting the right one so easy.
The frame comes fitted with two bottle holders that can also double up as a phone/mp3 player holder. It’s a nice touch compared to some of the Reebok GT models that are lacking this basic feature. It would have been nice to have a ledge somewhere on the display panel to hold an MP3 player or mobile phone but this isn’t essential.
Additional features included in the ZR9
A new feature of the ZR9 is the built in MP3 input, this is simply connecting your music player (mp3 player of mobile phone) to the treadmill using a male to male aux cable (mine was supplied).
The speakers are to a good standard, we had no complaints over the sound quality while in use.
One additional function of the ZR9 is that not only does it come equipped with a heart rate monitor, but the incline can be manually adjusted on the arm rests.
This is the first time we have seen this feature on a Reebok running machine and to be honest we didn’t find ourselves using it very often. This is due to the wide variety of incline levels that can directly be set from a single button press on the display panel.
Like most treadmills other than the very budget models, this one packs 16 different user programmes and 12 levels of incline. It can also give you feedback on speed, time, distance and calories burnt directly from the LCD panel.
The no manual test – How easy is it to operate without instructions?
This has to be one of the best treadmills for new and experienced users.
As mentioned in the notes above, not only can all the main features be found at the single touch of a button, but also the programmes come with clear instructions located on the feedback panel itself. This means that you rarely have to even check the user manual should you want to choose a more complicated pre-programmed workout.
If we had to pick any faults with the Reebok ZR8, it would be that it is heavy, most treadmills can be folded and pushed on wheels into storage.
This beast would require two people to move, and even then we found it a struggle. Secondly, while the LCD feedback screen is nice, it is basic. Some may find this to their advantage, but for the money we paid we have seen more advanced displays on the market.
Pros
- Quiet when in operation
- Good guarantees (Lifetime warranty on the frame + 2 Years warranty on parts and labour + 10 year motor warranty)
- Inbuilt MP3 speakers
- Easy setup
- Very good motor provided on this model
Cons
- Very heavy, we don’t recommend moving this after setup
- Feedback display is basic
- Was expensive when compared to others in same category (we paid full RRP for this treadmill)
2024 Review update
You have to go back more than 10 years to see when this treadmill was first released. It’s still a great piece of kit if you can get your hands on one, although I don’t think they are being made any more.
The good news is that due to the simple interface they have, they will typically last a long time as long as you keep the belts lubricated often.
Final word
Quite simply, the Reebok ZR9 is a great treadmill. If this treadmill does become available as a deal or special offer, you should jump at the chance.
This mid-high range treadmill ticks almost all the boxes and as long as you have ample space and don’t require the ZR9 to be moved on a regular basis then you will get on just fine. Like all treadmills, it does have its drawbacks, but the benefits far outweigh any minor points.
