The Lowdown

Introducing a product that we’ve never reviewed before- a water resistance rowing machine. JTX Fitness has brought this to the market and we can see why! Self-powered, so the only energy being used is from your body, with the smoothness and sound that makes you feel like you’re in the water… what more could you want from a piece of home gym equipment?

First Impressions

In my opinion, rowing machines are underestimated in the home fitness world, but I’m not sure why? Rowing gives you a powerful, full-body workout and is relatively low impact so is much kinder to your joints, too.

Anyway, focusing on this JTX Flow- taking it out of the box and putting it together was really easy, which was a positive. There are also clear lines on the water tank which lets you know how much to fill up, so in under an hour was ready to go!

The rower is smooth and dynamic, and the harder you pull, the harder the resistance, so it can give you a very challenging workout. The console is exactly as you’d expect on a rower with key metrics on the standard display. And it seems very sturdy too.

You store it vertically as there are wheels to move it around and I was a little worried the water might make it heavy to lift, but it’s fine and if anything makes it feel more robust when stored away.

And the best bit… the sound of the water gushing around the tank- you can almost imagine being on a lake taking in alpine air in the middle of nowhere (which I found quite relaxing!).

Pros

  • Self-powered (no electricity!)
  • Long rail length of 130cm
  • Heavy max user weight (21.3stone)
  • Phone/tablet holder
  • 2-year warranty

Cons

  • There is a max user height of 6’6”
  • Power only increases by the strength of pull (no resistance settings)

JTX Flow Water Rowing Machine Review

What’s Infinite Water Resistance?

Like I said before, this is a first for us reviewing a piece of equipment that uses water resistance, so what does it mean?

So, you might have guessed that it’s the water that creates the resistance for your workout, which means that the harder you pull, the harder the resistance will be.

This is good because you can really challenge yourself and doesn’t need any mains power to work, but on the downside means that the challenge will be based on your output. The infinite aspect relates to the oar blades in the water which creates a continuous and dynamic stroke.

I will agree with JTX’s marketing messages on the JTX Flow, that it definitely replicates the feeling like you’re actually rowing, not only with the sensation, but also the sound. This is a big plus point in my book and really differentiates it from other rowing machines on the market.

In terms of the logistics of having water resistance, obviously, you need to fill up the tank with water (and there are clear lines so you know how much to put in). Also, despite some concerns about the weight of a water machine, it is fine to lift/store at 33.5kgs (about 5 and a half stone).

Performance:

A question we always get asked about rowing machines is if you can still get a good workout as you would with a treadmill or cross trainer, and the answer is yes!

The JTX Fitness Flow rowing machine will give you a powerful full-body workout- the harder you pull, the harder the resistance which means you’re not just pumping those legs, but your arms too. The rail length is 130cm with a 121cm travel distance, so will enable a long stride to maximise effort.

There is a screen to measure and track performance, you can look at calories, watts, strokes, distance, time, 500m split time and get pulse feedback too. So you can really set and smash your workout goals. There are also selections such as race modes so you can really have a challenge!

Comfort:

The JTX Flow has some really nice touches like the wide padded seat and longer rail length which promotes a smooth and comfortable glide. This means that it’s suitable for a wide range of heights (the maximum height for this is 6’6”). There are also adjustable footplates, so you can adapt the machine to your body.

What sets this rower apart from the crowd is the little features that I think make a difference, such as a tablet holder that sits above the display panel- something that I often find annoying about rowing machines, that my phone needs to go on the floor! Also, most rowing machines can be quite noisy, but not this JTX rower, the only distraction will be the water sounds (and who doesn’t love those!?).

Things we really liked:

A very inclusive machine with the max user weight of 135kg (21.3 stone) and max height of well over 6 feet means lots of people can use this machine.

JTX Fitness customer service is excellent and with the 2-year warranty, always have that peace of mind.

Easy to store aware upright. Feels safe and doesn’t take up much room.

Final thoughts on the JTX Flow Water Rowing Machine

A powerful piece of home workout equipment that is inclusive for a wide range of fitness enthusiasts that is energy efficient too. The JTX Flow gets a big thumbs up in our book!

At over £500, it’s not cheap, but it doesn’t use any electricity, so you could make some savings there.

Some people won’t like the water resistance, and that is the nature of quite a niche product, like an air bike, but if you are a keen rower and like the idea of being immersed in a full-on rowing experience (lake and all) then you might love this…a lot!

JTX does have a showroom at Shoreham by Sea if you wanted to try it out for yourself, or they do offer a 28-day no quibble money-back guarantee too.
