The Lowdown
Getting that commercial-quality gym equipment feeling in the comfort of your own home is always an aspiration for any avid home gym user. JTX Fitness are known for providing just that.
In recent years they have added to their range by offering compact pieces of gym equipment, ideal for those who are a little tight on space and looking for something that won’t break the bank but still provide a premium look and feel.
I’ve been a big advocate of JTX’s other various pieces of gym equipment, so I am excited to see if the JTX Surge Rowing Machine lives up to my high expectations.
First Impressions
Right off the bat, the first thing you notice is how compact the JTX Surge is. This comes with both its positives and negatives. On the plus side, it doesn’t have a large footprint. On the downside for those above a certain height, this will prove a sticking point.
In fact, JTX advises that this rower is suitable for those with an inside leg measurement of 34 inches or 6 ft 2.
If you are in the category above this, then this machine won’t be for you. For those who fit the criteria, what you get in return for just shy of £300 is an easy-to-use, durable and overall high-quality piece of machinery, equipped with enough features to provide a versatile workout experience that will last for as long as you do.
Pros
- High-quality design and finish
- Great for small spaces
- 16 levels of digital resistance
- 14 Programs
- Lightweight
Cons
- Not suitable for those over 6 ft 2
- Small screen
JTX Surge Compact Rowing Machine Review
Design
Set up and assembly is relatively straightforward with the instructions outlining all the basic steps. I always like to have an extra pair of hands, especially as rowing machines can be a little awkward to move around during the building process. Once assembled, you’ll see just how much of a great space saver this rower is.
Anyone who has been to a commercial-grade quality gym will know just how sizeable rowing machines can be. The JTX Surge measures 152cm(l) x 77cm(w) x 55cm(h) and weighs in at 20.5kg, making it ideal for those looking for an at-home rower, which won’t clutter up the house.
When you’re done, simply stand it upright on its base frame to allow for space-saving storage and can be easily moved with the in-built transport wheels.
The sleek black finish is a nice touch and the overall look and feel is one that mimics other pricier models on the market, which gives a nice sense of value for money.
As mentioned, the one downside of having a rower that is compact is that it does make it not suitable for a wider range of users. If you are over 6 ft 2 or have a 34-inch inside leg length, then you’ll need to invest in a bigger bit of equipment.
Build quality
Poor quality rowers can feel a little jerky and juddery when in motion, however, you don’t get this with the JTX Surge. The magnetic digital resistance produces a smooth and quiet rowing experience throughout the 16 varying levels of resistance. Simply increase or decrease your resistance using the ‘+’ and ‘-‘ buttons which are clearly marked and easy to use whilst you are in motion.
The seat glides nicely over the track and the handles are comfortable in your palms, but I always recommend just making sure you keep the friction points well lubricated over time, in order to reduce wear and tear through continued use.
The foot straps are also comfortable and easy to adjust when needed.
Features:
The JTX Surge has 14 programmes, if like me, you enjoy having a set routine to follow and provides a nice range of flexibility. You can choose from interval programmes to intense fat burners, however, simply free rowing is always an option. Simply press start and you’ll be working up a sweat in no time.
The JTX also comes with an easy-to-use digital console, displaying all the essential workout metrics, such as time, distance, calories, etc. For me, the console was a little small for my preference and is certainly on the more basic end of workout machine consoles, but, it does the job perfectly fine if all you want is the basic metrics.
Things we really liked:
The overall rower feel was a big plus. It definitely punches above its 20.5kg weight when it comes to providing the stability you usually associate with a commercial-quality rowing machine.
Easy to store away and forget about when you’re not exercising.
Comes with a phone and water bottle holder!
Final thoughts on the JTX Surge Rowing Machine
I was really impressed with the overall rowing experience the JTX Surge Compact Rower gave me. When I saw how compact and light it was, I was concerned that the rowing, particularly at a higher resistance, may feel unstable, however, it was quite the opposite.
Overall with this JTX rowing machine you are getting a really good quality at-home rower, providing exactly what it said and promised on the tin.
A great addition to any at-home workout enthusiast.
If you’re interested in a JTX rower, then why not take a look at the new JTX Flow Water Rowing Machine– it’s pretty special!
