The Lowdown

A rowing machine will give you a full body workout, helps to build muscle and is low impact, so really kind on those joints. But some rowing machines on the market lack stability and are a bit cheap- which makes it hard to get maximum performance from an at-home rower.

As one of the cheaper JTX Fitness models, we look and see if the JTX Freedom rowing machine lives up to the JTX quality, or will leave you treading water.

First Impressions

Out of the box the JTX Freedom air didn’t feel too heavy (was about 46kgs- just over 7 stone), so I did feel a bit worried that it would lack robustness, but after setting it all up I was relieved!

With the dual magnetic and air resistance, you can manually select the level for your workout, and the air resistance will be more challenging, the harder you pull- so even the more enthusiastic rower will get a sweat on.

The console is clear and easy to use and you can race against the computer if you want to really push yourself. There is also the optional heart rate training if you have a Polar chest strap and want to really smash those goals!

The monorail is long and the rowing machine does feel quite sturdy, so I’d imagine would be suitable for most heights, and the max user weight is 135kg (over 21 stone).

Pros

  • Dual resistance system (air and magnetic).
  • Gym style saddle.
  • Foldable.
  • Heavy max user weight
  • No plug socket needed.

Cons

  • Need a mat to make it really sturdy
  • Sometime a little noisy.

Set Up

Delivery was spot on, and came exactly when I was told it would. There isn’t loads to talk about around assembly, as the box was just over 7 stone so I could manage it myself and setting up time was under an hour. All the parts were labelled and all tools were provided (although I did end up using some of my own- but wasn’t essential!).

The JTX Freedom doesn’t need to be set up near any plug sockets and can be folded and moved around using transportation wheels, so I wouldn’t say it was necessary to set it up in the room you are planning to use it in.

When all up and running, the JTX rowing machine measured L230 x W55 x H88cm and the monorail is quite long so I’d say most heights could use it comfortably (I’m 6ft1). But I did notice there is a guided max user weight of 135kgs.

Performance:

The JTX Freedom prides itself on having a heavy-duty frame, which it does, although I found that to get the most out of it I put a mat under it to make it even more sturdy (and not wobbly when in use).

The dual resistance options mean you can get maximum performance, so you can turn the knob to select your magnetic resistance level (1-8) and then the air resistance will be tougher the harder you row. So theoretically this rowing machine should keep challenging you as your fitness improves.

I definitely felt like I had a full-body cardio workout with this machine, and I also liked the console- as expected with most rowers, it’s basic, but aside from key metrics on performance, you can also race the machine with workout targets based on distance, time strokes and lots more.

Also, I haven’t got one, but this JTX Freedom rower is compatible with Polar chest straps, so another option to keep smashing your goals is to invest in one and try heart rate training.

Comfort:

Rowing isn’t the most comfortable exercise, even in the gym on a Concept2, but JTX has tried to give you a more comfortable row with some key features.

The monorail is 120cm, so relatively long, meaning you can have a full stride even if you’re taller, and that along with the gym-style seat roller gives a smooth and stable row.

The saddle is wide and cushioned, and it has wide foot paddles and adjustable fastenings, so you can really adapt it to your own body.

Things we really liked:

The design of the JTX Freedom Air is compact, and has a really easy fold option. When stored away, all the machine is taken up in height, so only 130 x 55cm of floor space is needed.

Unlike lots of rowing machines we review, this one has a tablet holder, so you can watch your tablet or listen to your favourite tunes to stay motivated.

As with all JTX products, there is a good 2-year in-home repair warranty on this rowing machine, so you can buy it with peace of mind.

Final thoughts on the JTX Freedom Air Rowing Machine

This JTX rowing machine is smooth and stable when it has a mat underneath. It also has lots of nice features like race targets to keep you challenged and motivated.

If you’re looking to get into fitness then it will definitely give you a good full-body cardio workout, but if you’re looking to really push yourself, you may need to invest in a Polar Chest strap to try some new training techniques.
