The Lowdown

A rowing machine is a good choice when you are looking for a low impact at-home workout option. Rowing helps you to burn calories and tone your upper and lower body at the same time.

The Roger Black Gold Air Rower offers an opportunity to buy a budget rower with an LCD display which allows you to monitor your progress as you exercise. It does not have all of the bells and whistles like more expensive rowers, but does that really matter? Let’s find out if it offers value for money at an entry level price.

First Impressions

The Roger Black Gold Air Rower features a modern design. The mainframe looks slick and robust in its’ orange and black design, and the stride rail is long. Overall, first impressions of the machine are positive once assembled.

The rower has a large clear LCD screen making it easy for you to monitor your stats. During a workout, the screen is positioned so that you can easily keep an eye on the number of calories you are burning or distance if you are aiming for a certain distance instead of calories. You can also monitor time and watts.

Although pitched as an entry level rower, it has more than enough features for the first time at-home rower. Compared to other rowers in the same price range, it looks well-built. The fan-based flywheel looks solid and durable.

Space-wise, the machine does not take up too much room. It is foldable, but this may not be a function you want to use every day. As with all other rowers, it is a good idea to buy an underlay to reduce noise and damage to floors or carpets, but saying that very little noise comes from working out with this Roget Black rowing machine.

Pros

  • 8 levels of tension
  • 12 incorporated programmes
  • Easy to read LCD display
  • Low noise
  • Foldable
  • 1 year product guarantee.

Cons

  • Maximum weight capacity of 120kg
  • Phone shelf hides console when working out.

Roger Black Fitness Gold Air Rower Review

Set-Up

Although you need to assemble the rower yourself, it is not a highly complex process. The rower comes with full assembly instructions and a clear manual. It took less than an hour to put together myself, and even though it’s sturdy, it only weighs about 7.5 stone (30kgs) so i could move it myself. But never a bad idea to get a second pair of hands if needed.

To get everything set up, you need to use a 5mm and 6mm Allen key, an adjustable spanner and multi-functional screwdriver which is all provided, but i did use my own spanner as I found it easier. The most challenging part of the setup process is the wiring. Make sure you don’t rush this. If you get stuck, there is a helpline you can contact. There is also an assembly video you can watch here, but I had to pause it regularly!

If you’re not a fan of self assembly then this Roger Black rower is a good choice as it really only needs 6 pieces set-up. Yes there are quite a few nuts, bolts and screws to get your head around, but once the main frame, stabilisers and rail is together it’s relatively easy.

The design is sleek and does not take up too much space. You need to allow for the 204cm length, but the rest of the rower is easy to accommodate. The overall height (mainframe) measures 105cm. The width is 64cm which is not a problem.

One thing to mention is to fold it away, you need to remove a nut, washer and pull pin to collapse it which is a little fiddly, but is quite compact when folded. Also, put those parts somewhere safe!

Design and performance

When it comes to performance, the 8 levels of tension offer you plenty of scope as a start and ongoing development of your rowing training at home. You can easily change the tension mid-workout with the knob in front of you.

The footplates are fitted with wide straps which makes it easy for you to stay connected to the plates all of the time.

It has to be said that the ergonomic seat leaves something to be desired. The seat is a little bit hard on your “derrier.” If you are planning a longer workout session, investing in a padded seat cover is a good idea.

The handlebars are comfortable and you get a good grip thanks to slight grooving.

Once you get going, the action is smooth. Even though this rower can be called a budget rower, you do get the feeling that you are gliding as you row. It is not jerky or “jumpy.” And it’s definitely robust.

Total workout experience

You do get a choice of 12 different workout programmes. The programmes are pre-set, but based on the feedback metrics already installed (time, speed, distance, calories, watts, strokes). For example, you can set yourself workout targets based on these metrics, like i want to burn 300 calories, or row for 30 minutes and so on.

This is all very easy to set on the display console and very intuitive. Like most rowers in this price range, the selection of programmes are basic, but as long as you set yourself clear goals, will still do the job!

The programmes are clearly set on the LCD display screen and as you are rowing and working through a program, you can continue to monitor your stats and progress. Worth mentioning that if you use the phone holder, your phone may get in the way of the screen…I decided to connect my phone to my Bluetooth speakers so my phone didn’t need to be on the holder.

What We Really Liked

  • For an entry-level rower, you get 12 pre-set programmes and 8 levels of tension, and a great price tag
  • The output from the fan will cool you down as your row.
  • When in use, the rower glides easily and the action is smooth. It is great that it is foldable but not so large you can’t leave it set up.

Final thoughts on the Roger Black Fitness Gold Air Rower

There is no need to be a fitness expert to use this Roger Black rowing machine. Set it up and get going straight away, take it at your own pace and challenge yourself based on your own workout goals.

This is a very sturdy, smooth and uncomplicated rowing machine for home use. And this rower comes with a 12 month guarantee. So, if you have any problems, there is a phone number you can call, to give you peace of mind.
