First Impressions

Opening the flat-pack, the first thing I noticed was the very Wattbike style slick red and black design, which immediately made me think about putting it in the lounge for everyone to see! But on that note, it will only work plugged into the mains, so think about the logistics of that before getting the Mary Onyx bike!

The box was heavy (nearly 5 stone) and the frame felt sturdy- definitely seemed like a nice piece of equipment.

Pros

  • 23 programmes
  • 16 auto resistance settings
  • 5 heart rate settings
  • Very Quiet
  • Accurate tracking data

Cons

  • Minimum height is 5ft
  • Padded seat could be comfier
  • 18.9 stone maximum weight

Marcy Onyx B80 Magnetic Resistance Upright Exercise Bike Review:

Marcy Onyx B80 Initial Set-up

Out of the box, the bike didn’t look too daunting to set up, and it wasn’t. To put the Marcy bike together and set the console up, was just over an hour. This might take less time if you had an extra pair of hands.

All of the parts and tools are supplied and the main frame comes straight out of the box, so it’s really just securing everything like the pedals, front support, handlebars and so on, around it.

When set up, the dimensions of the Marcy Onyx B80 are H138 x L87 x W50cm.

I would suggest checking the pre-assembly checklist and hardware packing list before you start. I was missing/misplaced a washer and luckily I had one in the garage but I would have been annoyed if I didn’t have a spare.

There are transportation wheels, but I would suggest setting the bike up close to mains power where you will use it. It needs to be plugged in to work. The Marcy bike also has floor adjustment dials, so you can make sure it’s level whatever floor type you’re using it on.

When I was doing some research, I found that a few people have been sent the bike with a faulty electrical adapter. So make sure you check this before you get started. If yours happens to be faulty and you’re waiting for a replacement to be sent, the bike uses the following adapter type: Available for Input 230V/50Hz or 60Hz Output: 6V DC/0.5~1A

The Marcy Onyx B80 Magnetic Resistance Upright Exercise Bike comes with a two-year guarantee if you have any problems.

Features:

For the price, the Marcy Onyx B80 bike comes filled with loads of features. To start, the backlit LCD display looks great and unlike lots of similar exercise bikes in this price range, has a big screen you can actually read!

You can never get bored with the 23 programme selections you can choose from. 13 of these training settings are preset and range from fat burn to intervals, to fartlek. Or, if you can simply select the manual mode and just ride!

This Marcy Onyx has 16 magnetic resistance levels that are integrated into your selected workouts, so the tension will increase automatically and you won’t have to do anything, just work those legs…Winner!

The flywheel is 5kg which is one of the few things that let this bike down- similar bikes seem to have slightly heavier flywheels, but saying that you can still give yourself a very challenging workout, so for the majority, this shouldn’t be an issue.

Performance:

How does the bike perform and are you going to get a good workout…? There is a lot of kit in the console that will allow you to manage your goals and track your performance easily.

Like most bikes in this price range, you can get feedback on all the usual metrics like time, speed, distance (Km and miles), calories, pulse (using the sensors on the handlebars) etc. You can also calculate body fat, something extra to add to the mix. And I was pleasantly surprised because when comparing lots of the data with my Smart Watch, it was very similar (which doesn’t often happen with bikes in this price bracket).

There are also 5 heart rate settings that allow you to really personalise that workout and set the goals specific to you- for example, if you wanted to do a HITT workout and needed your heart rate in a specific zone to improve performance, you can set that.

Design and Comfort:

I wanted to just quickly mention a few things here, as the Marcy Onyx B80 has features to allow for a more comfortable workout.

You can adjust most things on the bike- the handlebars, and the seat has 9 settings. The maximum user weight is 18.9 stone and recommended height range is between 5ft and 6.5ft. I found the smallest seat height quite high, so if you’re under 5ft, it might be worth looking at some alternative exercise bikes.

Things we really liked:

The bike has four user profile settings, which basically means if you have a family or live with others, you can all use the bike for your own personalised goals and track your individual progress

The magnetic resistance and build quality of the Marcy Onyx D80 is so good that the bike is practically silent when in use. So whether you want an early morning workout without waking the kids, or have neighbours close by, you don’t have to worry.

Maybe my favourite feature, and one that not enough bikes have, but there is a towel rack behind the seat, which will definitely come in handing when increasing the intensity! Also, you won’t get bored working out with the device holder underneath the LCD display. Very nice touches!

Easy lift system:

The Pro-Form T7 comes with an easy lift folding system. This allows a safe assisted lift and drop. I would hope so, this treadmill comes in at almost 100kgs! Although this treadmill has the ability to fold, I wouldn’t class this as a portable treadmill. I advise a fixed space for use and fold away for rare occasions where needed.

Final thoughts on the Marcy Onyx B80 Exercise Bike

Easy to assemble, very good build quality and some nice features not normally found in this price range, we are a big fan of the Marcy Onyx exercise bike.

There are some things to watch out for like the height restrictions and adaptor cable, and if you are really into your fitness then maybe the 5kg flywheel might not give you the challenge you need, but for most, it will certainly do the job!
