The Lowdown

The ProForm PFEX39421-INT TDF CBC (a catchy title!) is a mid to high budget bike boasting near silent magnetic resistance, iFit program system, 10kg flywheel and auto tension control. This definitely puts it in the category for serious workout and cycling enthusiasts.

First Impressions

As a bike that sits in the mid-high bracket of budget, there isn’t a lot, but in many ways that is the point. What is provided is very high quality, with the main purpose of the bike created to give a near perfect replica experience of cycling on a road bike, but in the comfort of your own home.

It weighs in at around 45Kg’s and the frame can comfortably hold a rider over 18 Stone in weight. The finish is excellent, none of the thin, heavily welded cheap frames you get on a budget exercise bike. This is a sturdy, robust, solid piece of machinery that instantly gives the feeling of quality.

Pros

  • Max user weight 115kg
  • iFit program system
  • Auto tension control
  • Full console feedback
  • Near silent while in use

Cons

  • Slightly heavy to move around
  • Requires self-assembly

ProForm PFEX39421-INT TDF CBC Exercise Bike Review

Set-Up:

You will be pleased to know that the majority of the bike comes pre-assembled, phew! Although I was a little worried while reading the instruction booklet that they recommend having a rubber mallet handy.

I am pleased to say that the main bulk of the bike comes complete, and it is only required to screw the main body to the base. The remaining fiddly bit is fixing the handle bars to the base unit and having to feed the sensor wires through and connect them up. This is typical with almost every bike that we have reviewed.

Overall, I was able to put the bike together by myself, and it only took around an hour and 15 minutes. Remember this isn’t a race, I would much rather you spend extra time making sure everything is correct, as it can save massive headaches in the future if faults occur.

Performance:

First point, I am pleased to announce that they are correct in terms of the ride, design and feel while in use. It is extremely quiet when in operation. This is typical with many magnetic resistance systems that are more on the expensive side.

Inclusion of a 10Kg flywheel really does suit this bike. Cheaper models that feature a 6 or 8Kg flywheel lack that little bit of quality that is hard to put into words. Like a bike that is in too high a gear every time you start to turn the pedals. Heavier flywheels like the one included also give a much smoother ride, closer to a real life road bike.

A reminder that this is a bike that is best suited to a cycling enthusiast who is looking for a great way to work out when they are time or weather restricted. Maybe you have previously owned or currently use a road bike and want to replicate the experience while in your home? It’s a great way to jump on, have a great workout without having to change into the right gear, get your bike ready or leave to ride on the roads in the rain or cold weather.

A question by many may be, why would you buy this bike over a more traditional exercise bike? Many, including myself, enjoy a riding session (even more with the iFit workout program) with a road bike feel, it has the added benefit of being closer to a spin bike in design. This means that you will typically burn more calories over a shorter period.

Comfort:

This is a difficult one, road bike cyclists will already know that a streamline saddle is a traditional part of the bike. As a road bike user myself, this comes naturally after about 1-2 weeks of use. This isn’t something that we would recommend for a person who wants a more leisurely exercise bike at home, they may disagree with this type of saddle and see it as a design flaw and hugely uncomfortable.

Although we didn’t test this ourselves, it seems a typical bike seat connection, allowing you to shop for any bike seat and make a change if you really wanted too.

You cannot fault the great design, with almost every part of the bike saddle and handle bars being adjustable for any rider who doesn’t fall into the extremes of height limitations. We were able to adjust the bike to an ideal ride in no time at all.

Things we really liked:

The iFit system included allow you to follow a huge library of programs to give you a great variety of workouts.

Mounted brackets for your tablet holder are placed out and in front. Typically, these can be too close on other bikes and make for uncomfortable viewing.

The handlebar design allows for more than 5 different hand grips. This is great for riders who may prefer different hand positions during their ride.

Final thoughts on the ProForm PFEX39421-INT TDF CBC

I am going to admit, this is one of the most difficult bikes to give a summary and score. On the one hand, if you enjoy cycling using a more traditional road bike, then this has to be close to the top of your list. Plus, it’s on offer right now and at a great price. You will also get great value from the iFit system that will provide some stunning ride programs for you to follow.

If you are looking for an exercise bike that is going to give you a more casual experience, with a typically lower average heart rate BPM and you want to stay in that fat burning over cardio workout zone, then we cannot recommend this bike.

The Tour de France branding isn’t a gimmick to sell the bike, it should act as a marker for if you think you will get the most out of this piece of equipment. I seriously enjoyed my time with the bike, and it would comfortably sit in the corner of my spare room ready for regular use. As I type this is it is almost winter in the UK, with the sunset being at around 4:30. This bike offers me a safe and quick way to have a workout in the comfort of my own home.
