The Lowdown

You might recognise the Slim Cycle from TV. It’s a folding bike, but with a difference! New Image Fitness talk about it being a 2-in-1 bike as it works as an exercise bike but also has built-in resistance bands for that upper body too.

We take a look to see if you can really get a full-body workout from the Slim Cycle.

First Impressions

Out of the box, the Slim Cycle seems relatively sturdy for a folding bike. Fully assembled we can see why it’s so popular- because it can be used by a wide range of fitness levels. And variety is something you don’t tend to get with folding bikes.

You can position the seat so it has an upright or recumbent setting, both giving you a different type of workout, and when combined with the resistance bands, you can really tailor your workout to hit your personal fitness goals.

The weight on the flywheel (that tends to determine how sturdy it is), is 1.5kg- that’s slightly lighter than some other folding bikes, like the Roger Black Folding Bike which is 3kg.

Also, worth mentioning that when the bike is in a recumbent position you cannot use the handlebars, but you’ll be so busy using the resistance bands, that it won’t matter!

Pros

  • Built-in resistance bands
  • Max user weight 135kg (21st)
  • Free workout app
  • Upright or reclined cycle settings

Cons

  • Lighter 1.5kg flywheel vs other folding bikes

Slim Cycle 2-in-1 Exercise Bike Review:

Set-up:

Firstly, if you’re not a fan of puzzles then you’ll be pleased with the Slim Cycle as the assembly was a breeze. It took me about half an hour to put together and the manual is great. Clear pictures (photos are not IKEA style drawings!) and step-by-step instructions.

The main structure and flywheel come as one part, so it’s really just putting on the pedals, saddles, handlebars etc together. You need tools like Allen keys and spanners that come in the box, but I did end up using my toolbox for some bits. The display console also needs AA batteries which all come with the Slim Cycle.

The delivered box fit through the door no problem and it weighed just over 3 stone (20.4kg), so I didn’t need any help carrying it. Also when folded away, the Slim Cycle has wheels to move wherever you want to hide it, which is handy to know!

The dimensions of the 2-in-1 Slim Cycle Exercise Bike when assembled are H115.5 x W44.3 x D21.2cm.

Build Quality:

With folding bikes we always get asked whether they are sturdy enough, which is a fair question- no one wants to pay for something that doesn’t give you a good workout, and the nature of a folding bike will make you question this.

Despite its lighter flywheel, the Slim Cycle is sturdy and robust. When cycling, despite being a bit of noise, there was no wobbling, and the seat with the backrest also reinforces this. The magnetic resistance system also made for a very smooth ride.

If you weren’t happy with your Slim Cycle then you’ve got peace of mind with the New Image Fitness 1 year’s guarantee.

Performance:

Can the Slim Cycle perform so you can hit your workout goals?

Let’s start with the console. It has a big screen that lets you track all the key metrics you’d expect to find on all exercise equipment nowadays: Time, speed, distance, calories, pulse (with sensors on handlebars) and odometer.

The Slim Cycle also comes with a free workout app that has 3 workouts on there for you to follow. This is a great way to stay motivated and make sure you’re challenging yourself. Most folding bikes don’t come with any programs, so this is a nice touch by New Image Fitness. Just so you know, you will have to subscribe to get the full suite of workouts.

Talking about challenging yourself, the Slim Cycle comes with 8 magnetic resistance levels to really intensify your workout. And you do have to change this manually by the knob under the handlebars, so it’s always good to try the different levels before starting your workout so you don’t have to stop when you’re really getting sweaty!

To really get this 2-in-1 exercise bike to perform to the max, let’s talk about the built-in resistance bands. They are attached to the bike underneath the handlebars and allow you to pull them whilst cycling to give that cardio and strength full-body workout. The resistance bands aren’t the best we’ve seen, but they do the job. It’s also good that if you shorten the bands you can increase the resistance and if you lengthen them, can decrease it.

So, I know it’s been mentioned before, but you can really adjust this bike to suit the workout you’re looking for.

Features:

Bikes in this price range don’t often come with much more that the basics, but the Slim Cycle does have some things to talk about:

Adjusted to suit you: This Slim Exercise Bike has two adjustments on the bike. One controls the distance between the seat and the pedals (by adjusting the length of the bar between them) and the angle of leaning back (by adjusting the length of the bar between the two main bars). So you can make sure whatever your height, or whether you want an upright or recumbent workout, it’s easily adjusted.

Seat and backrest: A nice touch on a folding bike is the backrest to give you a more stable and comfortable ride. The width of the seat is 30cm which is also quite wide for a folding bike. One thing I will say is the seat isn’t the most comfortable, so you might want to invest in a gel overlay if you’re planning on using this bike lots.

Tablet stand: We all love our watching our favourite telly or listening to tunes when we’re working out, and the Slim Cycle comes with a stand that is attached over the control panel. Something to keep you motivated!

Features we really liked:

The Slim Cycle 2-in-1 Exercise Bike can be used by a wide rand of people. Its height is adjustable to fit anyone from 4’ 11” to 6’ 4” (150cm to 193cm), and a maximum user weight of 135kg (21st 4lb).

3 free workouts when you download the app. Although you will have to subscribe to get these.

Can be used as a recumbent or upright bike- to give you variety and help you stay motivated.

Final thoughts on the Slim Cycle Exercise Bike

The Slim Cycle bike seems to be very popular with its customers, and we can see why. The bike can be adjusted to suit a wide range of users and has two cycling styles in one bike. That, along with the resistance bands is a really nice touch and means that it’s very easy to get the workout you want.

At under £250, the Slim Cycle is definitely an entry-level exercise bike, and more suited to beginners, but as long as you’re not expecting to become Sir Bradley Wiggins anytime soon, then we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised…
