The Lowdown

If you’re a keen cyclist, or might have watched a keen cyclist and wondered why they have funny shoes and no pedal straps on- they most likely have SPD Pedals. The term SPD stands for Shimano Pedaling Dynamics and basically refers to the design of clipless bicycle pedals.

And these JTX pedals are exactly that- allow you to clip in with your cycling shoe, or if you wanted to use your trainers too, also have the option to use toe-clips without having the faff of removing pedals.

First Impressions

The JTX Fitness SPD pedals seem sturdy out of the box. The great mechanics are clear to see with the pedal and the cleat (what attaches to the shoe), and connecting them was very easy and straightforward.

We did have to do our homework before getting these pedals as they come in two thread sizes (14.2mm and 18mm) that are compatible with certain bikes (see below), but JTX has very clear guidelines, so as long as you take your time, you’ll get the right ones! But worst case, JTX have a 28-day returns policy so you can always exchange.

What’s also great about these SPD pedals is that they give you the option to clip in OR use the top clips in one pedal, so you don’t have to take them off if you want to use them with normal trainers. That is a bugbear for lots of people who might share an exercise bike, as swapping over the pedals often can be quite time-consuming!

Pros

  • 2 sizes to choose from
  • Clip-in and toe clip option in one pedal
  • Increase workout performance
  • 28-day returns policy

Cons

  • Have to do homework if you don’t have JTX bike to know the right size.

JTX Fitness SPD Pedals Review

Benefits of SPD Pedals

SPD pedals are great if you’re looking to up your cycling game, or perhaps looking to increase your performance. The main idea of them is that clipping your shoe directly to the pedal clip, gives you a stable connection and allows you to really power those legs!

More power: With normal pedals, you always have to apply some pressure to the pedal as otherwise, your foot would come flying off, which doens’t allow you to use 100% effort. But as SPD pedals give you a solid connection, you can fully lift your foot up and maximise your power output.

More Muscles: As you can imagine, if you’re able to have more pedal power with SPD’s, then you’ll also be using a wider muscle range. Normal cycling is all about the quads, but with SPD pedals you’re using your core, hamstrings and much more!

What Exercise Bikes are these SPD Pedals compatible with?

As we said before, you’ll need to do your homework to find out what thread sizes to choose- JTX offers a comprehensive list of their products and pedal sizes, but if you’re still not sure, you can speak to their excellent customer service team for more information.

This information is from the JTX Fitness website:

Available in two thread sizes, our SPD pedals are compatible with the following JTX
exercise bikes:

18mm SPD Pedals:

JTX Cyclo-6 (If purchased before 31st October 2019)
JTX Cyclo Studio (If purchased before 31st October 2019)

Standard 14.2mm (9-16″) SPD Pedals:

JTX Cyclo Go
JTX Cyclo-3
JTX Cyclo-5
JTX Cyclo-6 (If purchased after 31st October 2019)
JTX Cyclo-Studio (If purchased after 31st October 2019)

How do I know what size SPD Pedals to get?

The main options for thread sizes for SPD pedals are 14.2mm and 18mm. As a general rule of thumb, most outdoor bikes will be compatible with the 14.2mm standard size. As you can see above, most of the JTX indoor bikes are also using the 14.2mm size, too.

It’s also worth mentioning that these JTX Pedals (both sizes) will fit 2 bolt cycling shoes.

Final thoughts on the JTX Fitness SPD Pedals

These JTX Pedals are great if you’re looking to go to the next level in cycling. They are similar to others you’ll find available to buy, but perhaps the best selling point for us is that they have a dual cycling setting.

This means they can be used with trainers and the normal toe cage OR as clip-in pedals with cycling shoes, something that is great to have on an indoor exercise bike (especially with multiple users).
