The Lowdown

A complete set of weights for less than £50? We didn’t really know what to expect when this set landed on our test table. Opti are a great brand in the fitness space, mainly focusing on providing a number of fitness machines and accessories at very reasonable prices.

Initially the box said 25Kg, which does seem a little light, even for an entry set of weights.

First Impressions

Unlike when we review a treadmill or rowing machine, there isn’t anything too technical about this kit.

It comes complete with 6 x 2.5Kg plates and 6 x 1.25Kg weights. This tidal 22.5 Kg which then comes to around 26Kg when you add on both the long and two shorter bars.

Initial thoughts were that the quality was surprisingly good, the finish on each weighted plate was good and both the bars and spin locks felt good to the touch and screwed on tight with no obvious defects.

As you can see from the pictures, the kit we had was all black and the weights perfects matched the bars. You would be surprised how many times we have been given weighted plates that didn’t match the bars provided.

Pros

  • High build quality
  • Good number of weight plates
  • Spin lock design
  • Nice colour scheme

Cons

  • 26 Kg Total seems a little light
  • Cannot add more than the recommended weights supplied

Opti Vinyl Barbell and Dumbbell Set 25kg Review:

Looking at the fine details:

Jumping straight in, the manual actually gives a good starter guide as to the numerous weights programs that you can use that target a wide range of muscle groups. Upright row, barbell squats and bicep curls are all possible with this set provided. We went through a 45-minute workout across a whole body spectrum, completing single barbell lunges, curls, squats and upright rows to really put the equipment to the test.

Unlike other budget weight sets, the addition of a spin lock design means that you can quickly and easily change the weights to your personal preference. Older sets would have had fixed lock mechanisms that took much longer to swap weights and were meant to be more of a fixed solution.

Downsides of this set are that we found ourselves having to really stack the bars with almost the maximum amount of weight to complete some of the exercises. In addition, the bar only allows for a low amount of maximum weight, so it’s not advised to buy more third party weights at a later date.

Is this right for you?

Ideally, we think it would have been better if the description said Opti Vinyl Barbell and Dumbbell starter set. It would have given a realistic idea of who should be buying this set.

If you are new to weightlifting, are a young person or maybe even elderly but want to add some muscle building into your daily routine, then this is the perfect set for you. I can fondly remember asking my father for my first weight lifting set in high school, and this would have been ideal at such a young age.

If you are a gym regular or can quality easily bench press 50Kg’s and above, then you would very quickly outgrow this set. In addition, there is no option to add more weight, as this would push it above the recommended weight limit for the bar.

Features we really liked:

It’s an excellent set for such a small price

Excellent build quality and will last a long time

Includes a spin lock design to quickly and easily adjust weights

Final thoughts on the Opti Vinyl Barbell and Dumbbell Set 25kg

A fantastic entry level weight lifting set for those looking for quality and affordability . We could find no faults when using this as part of our test, swapping weights was quick and easy. It looks good in the corner of our gym and can be fully dismantled if you need to store this away under your bed or in a cupboard.

The manual supplied is short and offers limited information, but a simple search on Google will give you an almost endless number of workout plans to get you started.

The downsides are that for anybody with weight lifting experience, they may quickly outgrow these weights, and you can’t add weights at a later date.

Looking at various websites, there are 642 reviews with an average of 4.8 / 5.0 which gives you an idea of the feedback for many people who have bought this set.
