Overview

Marketed as a way to climb your way to fitness, mimicking the movement of rock climbing, working all the major muscle groups. I would look to put this firmly into a supplementary piece of equipment that should be used in conjunction with weights or cardio.

Order and delivery

From ordering online to the moment it arrived at my front door was 2 days. I used Argos and they even sent me a text message to let me know a delivery time (I didn’t have to wait in all day, result!) It came neatly packaged and heavier than I was expecting at around 16.5kg’s.

Setup of the Maxi Climber Exercise Machine

Once you open the box you will be greeted by a number of square pipe fittings and fixtures. Much like our recent review of the Twist and Shape, New Image (the manufacturer) have done a good job of suppling clear and details instructions.

The whole setup procedure took us around 15 minutes to complete as it comes mostly pre-assembled. One tip from us is that you just quickly go around and double check all the screws are tight. Occasionally tightening one set of screws may result in a loosening of another.

Initial thoughts and build quality

I have to be fair to the manufacturer, initially it did seem that this was going to be a bit on the flimsy side. I just had flashbacks of extending radio or car aerials from the 90’s which when fully extended would bend or break at the slightest touch.

Once this was fully constructed, it didn’t move, the twin U-shaped feet ensure that you won’t fall off during use. Also from having a quick test to make sure it worked as set out in the manual, it all felt smooth and I am pleased to say there was no awkward flex when the handles were fully extended.

What is the Maxi Climber?

Like a lot of fitness equipment that doesn’t fit into a traditional category, it claims to work your whole body. Because I haven’t yet tested tested a machine that operates in this fashion (the closest would be a stepper) so I am not going to report their claim as exaggerated just yet.

Supplied instruction booklet and additional extras

Included with the Maxi Climber is a user manual with detailed setup instructions, Maxi Diet planner and exercise sheet and a digital counter. After reviewing the Twist and Shape recently that was supplied with a workout DVD I was initially disappointed not to receive one with the Maxi Climber.

The good news however this has led to a number of self-made workout videos for the Maxi Climber that are up to a very high professional standard. Simply searching ‘Maxi Climber Workouts’ in YouTube brought up pages and pages of good quality results.

Also supplied is a 21 day diet and exercise plan which I am afraid that I am not going to follow during testing. Simply because the diet supplied is aimed at those who want to tone up and burn calories. My diet follows a much larger intake of protein and specific food groups to grow and maintain muscle mass. But if slimming down is going to be part of your routine then let me know in the comments below how it went.

Lastly a basic LCD portable timer is supplied which you could place in a comfortable location (or on a high shelf in my case) to keep you on schedule.

Testing the Maxi Climber

So how did it go? What happens in the first 5 minutes?

I went straight into it and started with the first routine recommended on the wall planner, except what I wasn’t going to tell you is that I planned on doing double the suggested length of time for each exercise. I consider myself a fairly fit guy in good shape, I should have no problems.

Wrong, this machine is brutal, after 10 minutes of a fairly fast pace I was wondering what I had let myself in for. I was sweating all over and the phrase ‘feeling the burn’ was an understatement. I can see why this piece of equipment has so many videos dedicated to HIIT (High intensity interval training).

Good news for those looking for less strenuous exercises routine it does work off your own body weight and you can go at your own pace. Some exercises also mean that you work different muscles in different ways, this will help you to keep going for the recommended time for each day.

After the initial test workout I decided to stick with all of the original instructions supplied on the wall planner, for the sake of the review of course.

Results after using the Maxi Climber

I have to admit that personally using this in addition to my existing routine was simple enough. It may be a large piece of equipment during use, but it folds away quite easily and flat for storage.

The results were much better than I expected, I would definitely recommend its use for those who want to include an alternative for of cardio workout that isn’t a treadmill. I would also go as far as to say that because of the increased use of the upper body during the exercises it’s a much more intense workout than using a treadmill and even a cross trainer.

A feeling of total exhaustion after each workout is something that everybody should be aiming for. I had aching muscles that I didn’t know existed and I did feel much fitter after the test period as a result.

Feedback from my partner is that I have also lost a little bit of weight and look more toned that before I started the program. So it’s a thumbs up from her, although she has shouted at me a few times when I may have forgotten to put it away after use.

Pros

  • Good build quality
  • Mostly pre-assembled
  • Works well as part of a HIIT workout
  • Low impact on joints
  • Folds away flat for storage

Cons

  • No supplied workout DVD
  • Not as forgiving as some other workout machines (could be considered a good point)

Final thoughts

If you are looking for high intensity cardio working your entire body then the Maxi Climber could fit the bill. It will suit those who maybe don’t have 45 minutes to spend running on a treadmill but have 15 minutes to spare at the start or end of each day.

To see results you do however have to be strict and make sure that you follow the recommended plan or one of those on YouTube. I would also recommend a minimum of 15 minutes a day (30 if possible). Overall a very good piece of kit.
