Fitbit, one of the global best-selling fitness and smartwatch manufacturers has made a voluntary recall of all Fitbit Ionic watches. The watches were all manufactured between 2017 and 2020.
Reading the FAQ section of the site, when asked ‘should the watch be continue to be worn?’ NO! is the clear response, as well as confirmation that they stopped making the watch in 2020 and have no plans to resume production on existing or newer models.
How and why is this happening?
Fitbit have received more than 180 reports of the lithium battery in its Ionic watches causing potential skin burns from overheating. We have seen this previously in smartphones and other devices that rely on these types of batteries.
The CSSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) have advised in a report that it was aware of 78 reports within the US and 40 internationally. Two of these cases are what are deemed severe, resulting in permanent damage to the skin.
Although vigorous testing is done prior to distribution of these watches by major brands, not every eventuality and scenario can be run prior to launch. And another thing to think about, the number of reports equates to around 0.01% of all Fitbit Ionic watches sold. Tiny.
What is Fitbit offering me?
Fitbit would like to stress that currently none of their other fitness trackers are affected.
Fitbit have sold approximately 1.7 million of the Ionic watch in question. A statement has been issued advising people that they can return their watch to the manufacturer and receive a device refund of $299 (approx. £230).
What we think is a good move by Google and Fitbit is that they are also offering a discount on a newer model as a good-will gesture. This actually makes the hassle of sending the device back into a much more beneficial trade.
Fitbit 40% Discount
Looking further into what is offered, you can get a 40% discount on one of five models that Fitbit currently sell. Please note that there are some limitations and these can be found by reading more on their site. Reading the current list, 45 countries are listed as being able to claim the discount plus perks.
A statement from Fitbit they have also relayed the following information:
“Customer safety is always Fitbit’s top priority and out of an abundance of caution, we are voluntarily recalling Fitbit Ionic smartwatches.”
How do I know if I have the Fitbit Ionic that is being recalled?
Firstly the image below should match your version, it will have 3 buttons and a coloured LCD panel.

To confirm this, please turn over the face of the watch and check for the model number in small font just above the clasp.

You can also check your Fitbit app to see what watches you have connected to your device.
