The Lowdown

You might not have heard of K-Mart, but you will have most likely seen the concept of weighted hoops used for exercise (and probably clogging up your Facebook feed!).

This Hula Ring has a 360-degree spinning ball that is weighted, so if you use it correctly, it can be used for fitness and core building. And it also has 27 detachable links so it adjusts to your size. And more importantly, comes in some fab colours! But is it a fad or can it really help your workout routine?

First Impressions

Costing under £40, the K-MART Smart Weighted Hula Hoop offers great value for money. When you first get it out of the box, it does look very pink (or you can get blue/purple too!). You could almost say it looks a bit like a gimmick. Is it a workout aid or a fashion accessory?

The hoop itself looks rather intimidating and you may wonder how comfortable it is going to be to have this “ball and chain” around your waist. The feel of the hoop is solid but feels lightweight. Although the ball weighs only 0.70grams, it feels heavier when you hold it in your hand.

This K-MART hoop adjusts to fit your size, but adjusting sections is slightly fiddly. However, it is an attractive home workout option as it is equipment that you can take anywhere and it delivers results (as long as you set it up correctly and safely).

Set-up:

Once you get it out of the box, it takes you a couple of minutes to adjust to your waist size. The best idea is to try a couple of different size configurations until you find the one which is right for you. If too tight, you may not get the best results out of your workout. When adjusted correctly, you will “feel” the K-MART Smart Hula Hoop doing its job on your core.

Performance When In Use:

Unlike other hula hoops, you don’t have to worry about the K-MART Smart Hula Hoop falling down. Once you have adjusted it, it stays safely and securely around your waist. As it spins around, you can feel it massaging your obliques, back and front core muscles. 

Thanks to the addition of the ball, it spins around easily and almost encourages you to move. And the recommendation to use it for about 15 minutes definitely was enough to start feeling your core working.

Comfort:

After a long period of sitting, it feels almost good to use this hula hoop ring. One of the main advantages is the added benefit of the massage points. Although solidly made, it does not feel heavy once you are wearing it. The added weight of the ball gives it momentum which gives you a sensation that it floats more than circles around you. 
The movement is easy and flowing. This is not a workout tool that you need to put a lot of effort into to get results. The flowing feeling makes it easy to work out. At the same time, it encourages you to work harder as you can feel the hoop doing its job.

It is worth mentioning that spending time getting the fit correct will be very important to ensure the hoop doesn’t rub/isn’t too tight.

Adjusting Link Management:

One of the top-selling points is that you can adjust the links. Once you get it home, you will notice it consists of 24 adjustable parts (and they often give some additional ones). It can be adjusted to a 132cm waist size. You do so by removing or adding links. The smallest amount of links you can leave on the hoop is 15. You can also buy more if you need them.

At first, adjusting the 4 links is a bit fiddly. However, once you get used to removing and adding links, it becomes easier.

Also, make sure the power ball is fitted into the slide rail correctly because if it isn’t it could come apart in use which may be dangerous.

Recommended Use:

K- MART claims the hula hoop burns calories quickly and increases weight loss. For it to benefit you, you need to spend at least 15 minutes per day using the hula hoop. An added benefit of using the hula hoop ring is that it increases your flexibility.

Features we really liked:

It is easy to use! Once you have found the right waist size for you, just simply put it on and start your workout.

Do you need a lot of space? Nope! Unlike larger hula hoop rings, it does not need a lot of space. You do need “clear air” around you so that you don’t knock down your favourite house plant. Apart from that, you can pretty much hula hoop anywhere.

The gravity ball is also lightweight which makes it suitable for those with back problems.

The K-MART Smart Weighted Hula Hoop is a great fitness purchase for many people who are looking to improve their core and get more active. It is definitely a tool for both improving and maintaining your physique along with improving your posture.

It does need to be fitted correctly to make sure the hoop is safe and you get the best results, but as long as you spend time getting that right, the K-MART hula hoop was enjoyable to use and got us feeling our core muscles again! Plus it comes in a great range of colours which always helps a workout…
