Set Up of the Women’s Health Barbell Set

It is quick and easy to set up as the bar comes in 3 pieces and screws together. It has a sleek and stylish design, as well as being compact, meaning it won’t take up too much of your room space. The Women’s Health Barbell Set comes with adjustable weights and in 3 different weight sizes, allowing the user to adjust the weight to their preference.

The 20kg max weight will be suitable for a variety of user levels, however I would recommend investing in extra heavier plates if you need that extra push.

The bar itself is made from cast iron, meaning it is strong and sturdy. The plates are made from vinyl, so they allow for a bit more cushioning when being placed down. That being said, it wouldn’t hurt to make sure you’ve got a soft surface beneath you when exercising, just in case you drop the weights.

The weights themselves are also anti-roll shaped, meaning they shouldn’t roll off with a mind of their own and come in 2 x 1.25kg, 2 x 2.5kg and 2 x 5kg sizes.

One of my favourite features about the Women’s Health Barbell Set is the quick release spring collars. These are similar to clips you see in gyms and allow for a much more efficient workout when compared to screw clips, which I’ve used previously with other at-home weight sets.

One of the few downsides to the set, is the lack of hand grips on the bar. Being cast iron, this doesn’t present too much of an issue, as it still allows significant grip, however it is something to bear in mind, depending on the exercise you are performing.

I would also recommend squeezing the quick release clips a few times before use, as they can be a bit stiff at first and can be a bit fiddly to adjust.

Exercises for the Women’s Health Barbell Set

I decided to pick up this particular set, as I wasn’t always able to get to my pump and tone fitness classes and wanted something I could use in my own home and when I was short on time. The Women’s Health Barbell Set is ideal if you’re looking for an affordable piece of equipment to do just that. It’s perfect for a range of different exercises, so you can really pump and tone that upper body.

My favourite barbell exercises – I like to do 8-15 reps of each exercise and then repeat for 3 sets to really feel the burn.

Bicep curls

A classic arm exercise to get the upper body pumping. Simply hold the bar roughly shoulder width apart, with palms face up and your elbows tucked in to your side. Slowly raise the bar towards your chin, making sure your elbows stayed tucked and back down to your starting position and voila, you’ve done a bicep curl. Now repeat several times.

Shoulder press

This exercise will really work the traps and deltoids. When I did my first shoulder workout, I remember I could barely pick up a cup of tea the next day! Hold the bar by your waist with your palms face down, slightly more than shoulder width apart. Lift the bar to below your chin, so the bar is resting across your upper chest.

Then raise the bar above your head and back down to your upper chest. Be careful not to lean back when doing the exercise and keep your back as straight as possible, otherwise you’ll put unwanted pressure on your lower back, which your body will not thank you for.

Bench Press

– Now if you don’t have a bench to hand, you can always use the floor or an exercise ball if you’ve got one. I recommend the Opti 65cm Gym Ball. Lie on the surface of your choice, with your feet flat to the floor. Hold the bar shoulder width apart, with your palms facing the ceiling and your knuckles facing your chin. Have the barbell resting midway down your pectoral muscles. Push the barbell away from you and gently lower back down to the starting position.

Make sure you don’t lock out your arms when you extend, as this puts pressure on your elbows. Quick tip, the further apart your hands are from each other, the more you’ll be working on your pecs and the closer your hands are, the bigger emphasis on your triceps, so vary your workout depending on your goals.

Final thoughts on the Women’s Health Barbell Set – 20kg

For those looking for a quick, cheap and easy way to get results then the Women’s Health 20kg Barbell is an ideal fit. Solid construction and good quality materials ensure that the weight set will last many years of regular use.

You get results faster with free wights than any other form of equipment (including those fancy expensive machines at the gym). There is a reason why free weights  are still as popular now as ever, they are easily stored away and allow for you to match the weight to your preferred difficulty. If you follow a strict workout routine you will see visible results in under 7 weeks and feel stronger.
