Overview

Sitting in the middle of the Reebok exercise bike range is the ZR8 electronic exercise bike. In a similar way to the ZR8 treadmill, the exercise bike is aimed at an audience that demand a lot for their money but still have to remain budget concious.

Order and delivery

It came well packaged and it was quite heavy for an exercise bike weighing in at around 34Kg’s in its box. I was able to get a discount at the time of ordering so I hope you are able to do the same.

I would not recommend going to collect this item, all good stores should only charge you a minimal fee of a few pounds for delivery.

Initial Setup

As with most Reebok exercise bikes the instructions were well laid out and simple to follow. The booklet came with a set of numbered diagrams for easy assembly and took around 1 hour 10 minutes to complete. The most difficult part was making sure that the LCD feedback unit was fitted to the neck correctly.

Please note that the ZR8 exercise bike is mains powered and so will require a plus socket within close range of wherever you plan to place it.

First thoughts and build quality

With an RRP of £349 I expect quality and I am happy to say that the ZR8 does deliver in this category. The flywheel and mechanics are all neatly stored away within the enclosed base unit and the neck, grips, seat and frame are all of a good quality.

Aesthetically I think it looks rather nice and would fit in with the majority of home workout areas. It is black all over with subtle hints of silver for parts of the frame and yellow for the badge.

A special mention for the seat on the ZR8, as not only did I find it one of the most comfortable we have tested but also it’s adjustable both vertically and horizontally to get the ideal match to your body shape.

9Kg Fly Wheel

Included with the Reebok ZR8 is a 9Kg fly wheel. For all the glitz and glamour of how your exercise bike looks (and this is important) this really is one of the most vital parts of your exercise bike that will go unnoticed. Reebok have done an excellent job of including a very high quality, good weighted fly wheel with the ZR8.

A 9kg fly wheel ensures a smooth motion while in use. The fly wheel gives you natural resistance throughout a whole rotation unlike cheaper magnetic bikes that may feel uneven during use.

32 Levels of tension control

The amount of tension that you will require during your workout will vary depending on your natural body weight and what type of workout you are aiming for. Reebok have included 32 levels with the ZR8 to cater for all needs. During testing, we can confirm that low tension levels were suitable for even the lightest working all the way to us hardly being able to turn the pedals.

LCD Display and more

Much like the Reebok ZR8 treadmill the ZR8 exercise bike has a similar LCD feedback display. For two very good reasons, firstly to keep costs down during the production stage through mass production. This allows Reebok to stay competitive with their pricing. The second is that they have put a lot of research and testing into what people like best and so why not use it on multiple types of gym equipment?

The LCD display clearly shows all the digits with a nice white on blue background which I am personally a big fan of. The programme details are a light green and clearly displayed within the middle of the feedback screen.

Underneath the LCD display are the possible options available marked P1-P12 and represent the instant workout programmes available. A hand small image is also displayed to show you what you can expect the intensity to be like during the workout.

It’s really hard to fault any part of the setup on the Reebok ZR8, the option buttons are clearly marked and I did not have to at any point revert to the manual to help make any choices.

Heart rate monitor and bottle holder

The Reebok ZR8 exercise bike comes with a heart rate monitor on the handlebars that can be used to measure the intensity and target goal of your workout.

Also included are self-levelling pedals that prevent you from having to do a form of foot acrobatics to spin the pedal onto your foot.

One of the only negatives that we have to say about the Reebok ZR8 exercise bike is that it doesn’t have a bottle holder as standard. While some may only see this as a minor flaw it is tedious to keep having to get off the bike to take on fluids if you don’t have a suitable place within arm’s reach.

Pros

  • Good value for money
  • High-quality finish
  • Self-levelling pedals

Cons

  • No water bottle holder
  • Small text on LCD unit

Final word

I have to say that during testing the Reebok ZR8 did grow on me. It’s very similar to both the Roger Black Platinum and ZR9 exercise bike.

The RRP does feel high when you compare this to other models, however if you were lucky enough like myself to pick this up with a bit of a discount then you will not be disappointed with your choice.
