First impressions of the NordicTrack GX 4.6 Pro Exercise Bike

NordicTrack add to their impressive resume of at-home exercise equipment with the GX 4.6 Pro, an exercise bike guaranteed to help you achieve your fitness goals. Visually, the GX 4.6 Pro grabs your attention straight away, as the large and bulky design looks like something you would be used to finding in a commercial gym, rather than someone’s living room.

But that’s what NordicTrack are all about; providing you with that gym quality look, feel and workout experience.

What also grabs your attention is the price tag. At just under £900, you expect a lot of bang for your buck. Whilst the GX 4.6 Pro is at the higher end of the pricing spectrum, the GX 4.6 delivers value for money, with top quality build and riding quality present throughout and high-performance features coupled with a wide variety of user options suitable for riders of all abilities.

Review of the NordicTrack GX 4.6 Pro Exercise Bike

Build Quality and Set Up:

The GX 4.6 Pro exercise bike is designed to be durable and stable. Weighing in at 47kg (7.4 stone), with dimensions of 94L x 63W x 156Hcm, it is quite a sizeable exercise bike.

This larger, bulkier frame compared to a foldable exercise bike, produces a more stable and balanced ride and the max user weight of 135kg, means the GX 4.6 is accessible for a wide variety of users and caters for all types of users from the beginner to the cycling veteran.

When it comes to setting up your bike, it took me around a hour/ hour and a half to have this assembled following the instructions that come with the bike. Overall, this wasn’t too complicated to assemble, however due to the bulkier nature of the bike, I would recommend two people helping in order to speed up the process.

In terms of storage, the bike isn’t foldable, so keep that in mind if you are tight on space.

In terms of peace of mind, the bike comes with 2-year parts warranty and a 5-year frame guarantee.

Performance:

The high-performance features on the NordicTrack GX 4.6 Pro come from the powerful 11kg Inertia-enhanced flywheel. This large flywheel supports 24 digital resistance levels, from the easy pedal, right up to the tough uphill climb. This means even those with Tour De France ambitions should be able to work up a considerable sweat.

NordicTrack have put the comfort of the user at the forefront of design when it comes to the GX 4.6 Pro exercise bike. The AutoBreeze workout fan helps to keep you cool and the Silent Magnetic Resistance system produces a smooth and comfortable riding experience and helps keep the wobble and noise to a minimum.

There is also an oversized cushion seat, tablet holder, vertical and horizontal seat adjustment and extra-wide, ergonomic foot pedals with adjustable strap. Nicely done!

Features:

The GX 4.6 Pro comes with a decently sized 7 inch HD touch screen display, meaning you can easily track and keep up with all your usual workout metrics, such as speed, calories burned, time and distance. There is also an EKG grip pulse heart rate monitor and the bike is also BLE chest belt compatible. If like me, you enjoy listening to music whilst you workout, the GX 4.6 Pro also comes with dual 2 inch speakers.

All these features are fairly standard on a good quality exercise bike, but what really creates a strong differential for the GX 4.6 Pro is the iFit integration capability and 1-year iFit family to over 16,000 workouts and an online fitness community. You can automatically track your progress and view scenic rides through Google Maps as you exercise. You can also compete with your friends and custom fit your training to your specific goals.

You’ll also have access to professional iFit Trainers, where you can follow along with workouts, providing the gym class experience but in the comfort of your own home. As this is a yearly subscription, you will have to pay the membership fees after the first free year has expired if you want the iFit continued access, so keep in mind there is an ongoing cost.

Pros

  • iFit integration
  • Ergonomic pedals
  • 11kg flywheel produces 24 digital resistance levels
  • 7-inch HD touch screen display
  • Console feedback includes speed, time, distance, calories, resistance, watts, and heart rate
  • Oversized comfortable cushion seat
  • Silent magnetic resistance system
  • Fantastic build quality
  • High max user weight 130kg (over 20 stone)

Cons

  • Non-foldable
  • Quite expensive

How does the NordicTrack GX 4.6 Pro compare to the Reebok GSB Electronic Aerobic Bike?

The Reebok GSB Electronic Aerobic Exercise Bike is another upright designed exercise bike, catered for the high performance, middle to upper price range end of the at-home exercise bike market. In terms of design, look, feel and build quality, I would have to give the edge to the NordicTrack GX 4.6 Pro. I personally prefer the black and silver sleeker design, although this is down to user taste.

One thing to note is the GSB is considerably heavier and larger. This is where the GSB outperforms the GX 4.6 Pro in terms of performance, where the enormous 18KG flywheel allows for 32 varying levels of tension. The GSB also has much larger footprint, and does take up quite a bit of space, which again can either be a plus or a minus depending on how much space you have.

In terms of features, I would have to give the advantage to the GX 4.6 Pro, which comes with a larger and better-quality display console and more comfortable seat, but for me, the main differential is the iFit integration. This elevates the NordicTrack’s offering by providing an unparalleled level of workout variety and for me, this is a real motivational boost and provides that extra bit of quality. This does comes at an extra £300 price tag compared to the GSB, so it is important to consider what you want from an exercise bike.

Final thoughts on the NordicTrack GX 4.6 Pro Exercise Bike

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of most things NordicTrack produces. I really like their build quality, design and performance features, whereby if you invest in a NordicTrack exercise machine, you are guaranteed a certain level of quality assurance.

Now the GX 4.6 Pro Exercise Bike is expensive. If you want the more standard performance features, such as a heavier flywheel and subsequent higher tension levels and aren’t interested in the iFit integration, then I would recommend saving the money and going for a cheaper model. But, if iFit integration is something up your street, then you can’t go far wrong with the NordicTrack GX 4.6 Pro.
