Concept behind the CAROL?

I thought I would start this review by going into what a CAR.O.L bike actually is, as well as giving you an overview of the science behind this quite unique piece of exercise equipment.

The science boffins behind the CAR.O.L. (Cardiovascular Optimisation Logic) bike, claim that their AI powered exercise bike can give you the cardiovascular benefits of a 45-minute jog in under 9 minutes, with only 40 seconds of intense work.

They say that regular use of the CAR.O.L. can get you 132% healthier in 98% less time – A pretty bold claim indeed, but when the price tag is just shy of £3,000, you would expect something game changing.

So, you might be sat there with a rather sceptical look on your face right about now, however this is where the sciencey bit comes in, so bear with me!

When you eat food, particularly those high in carbohydrates, your body breaks this down into glucose, which in turn is stored in your muscles as glycogen.

Glycogen acts as fuel for your muscles, so having glycogen at the ready, means you’re able to exercise for longer. Without glycogen, your body needs to turn to other sources for fuel, such as fat.

How it Works

The CAR.O.L bike works on the principal that two 20-second sprints at high intensity are enough to quickly deplete your muscles of glycogen and after a few months of regularly using the CAR.O.L bike (3-4 times a week), your body will have adjusted to rapid glycogen depletion and become better adapted at burning fat over time.

Many studies have shown the positive effects of doing intense exercise in short bursts; you might have heard of High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT workouts.

High-intensity workouts can come in all shapes and sizes, such as burpees or sprints, and are all designed to shock the body by getting the heart rate up and blood flowing.

This is exactly what the CAR.O.L. bike offers through the power of Artificial Intelligence.

All of this adds up to 9 minutes of exercise, or 36 minutes a week if you were to use it four times.

The bike also promises not to make you sweat. A lot of the CAR.O.L advertising shows office workers using the bike in their lunch break or busy mum and dads quickly getting in some exercise whilst the children are asleep, all portraying how the CAR.O.L bike is meant to make exercise convenient for you.

The excuse of not having enough time to go the gym, might just be a thing of the past.

CAR.O.L Bike Review

Using the CAR.O.L Bike

So, you’ve now read a little about the fundamental principles that fuel the vision behind the CAR.O.L bike, but what is it actually like to use.

When it comes to setting up the CAR.O.L bike, there’s a step-by-step instruction booklet, as well as available video instructions.

If you do come a cropper at any stage during the assembly, then there is a fantastic customer service team on-hand. The customer service team can also help with any configuration issues you might experience when setting up the bike, as you will need an Internet connection.

The CAR.O.L. also weighs in at 59kg (just over 9 stone), so it can be quite heavy to keep moving around and overall it has a max user weight of 130kg (c20 stone), so it should be suitable for a good variety of users.

During the initial setup, you’ll need to fill out some personal information, such as age, weight and height.

Through monitoring your biometrics in real-time and cross-referencing the data the bike collects with every workout, the CAR.O.L. is able to customise every workout for maximum benefit.

The process starts with a data collection phase. This consists of six introductory rides, whereby the bike accesses your current fitness and health levels, in order to establish a baseline, which in turn it will use to tailor your progress and works through continuous adjustments from the 1,000 resistance settings the CAR.O.L. bike has up its sleeve.

Once you have completed this introductory phase, you will then be able to use seven different workout modes:

  • Intense
  • Energiser
  • Fat Burn 30
  • Fat Burn 60
  • Constant Power
  • Continuous Ramp Up
  • Free Ride

Intense

Intense is the primary 8 and a half-minute workout the CAR.O.L offers. Here is how it is broken down:

  • Warm up: 2 minutes
  • All-out sprint: 20 seconds
  • Recovery: 3 minutes
  • All-out sprint: 20 minutes
  • Cool down: 3 minutes

Energizer

This is a shortened version of Intense, which has two 10-second sprints instead. As the name suggests, it is designed to give your body a bit of a wakeup call, but not totally zap the body and is more suited for off days or to keep the body ticking over.

Fat Burn 30 and Fat Burn 60

These workout modes are ideal if you’re looking to lose weight and burn fat. These two workouts consist of a two-minute warm-up, 30 or 60 eight second sprints, with 12 seconds rest in between each sprint and then a three-minute cool down. Truly an absolute killer of a workout.

Constant Power

Constant Power is a clever one, where the CAR.O.L will adjust the resistance automatically to maintain your desired power. This works through adjusting the resistance as your RPM changes. All you need to do is keep pedalling, and the CAR.O.L. bike will take care of the technical bit.

Free Ride

Free Ride is there if you’re looking to just go at your own pace, similar to how traditional exercise bikes work. You can set the resistance and other goals you would like to achieve and then just start pedalling.

Continuous Ramp Up

This workout mode automatically increases power by 1 Watt every 3 seconds, designed to be a long and arduous stamina test, with the goal of improving your VO2 max. Therefore, to get the full benefit out of this workout, attach a portable VO2 max analyser, in order to track progress.

Other Features

In terms of what else the bike offers from a software and hardware point of view; I have summarised the key attributes below:

  • Can have up to 8 user profiles that use the AI technology
  • Personalised resistance continuously optimised
  • Built in safety algorithms
  • Web and mobile apps providing dashboards, trends, and leader boards
  • New features and updates automatically installed via the cloud
  • Gym grade quality exercise bike
  • Silent when in use and a slick and comfortable riding experience
  • Integrated heart rate monitor
  • Ergonomically sculptured comfortable saddle
  • Stainless steel frame with a heavy 14kg flywheel, creating a sturdy and stable riding experience.
  • Fully adjustable seat and handlebars
  • Built in music options
  • Bluetooth connectivity for headphones

One thing I really like to do is track my progress. This is key to staying motivated and actually making sure you stick to an exercise routine.

Every time you finish a workout, CAR.O.L can save the ride and you can see how you compare to other CAR.O.L. bike users across the world on weekly leader boards, as well as just keeping a tab on your own personal progress. If you’re like me and a tad competitive, I really like this feature, where it adds a more fun element to exercising.

CAR.O.L also has integration with the Peloton Digital platform. This means you can get the best of both worlds in terms of intense solo rides, incorporating all the benefits of HIIT workouts, as well as having access to the more traditional style of free riding, where you can take part in online classes offered via Peloton.

It must be noted that in order to get access to this feature, you’ll need a paid subscription to Peloton Digital, so just keep that extra cost in mind, if this kind of thing appeals to you.

Final thoughts on the CAROL Bike

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room, the price tag. This bike is expensive. On top of the near £3,000 price tag, you also need to pay a £12 per month subscription and if you do want the Peloton integration, it will cost extra too.

That being said, this is a quite unique bike in terms of the results and benefits it can give you. There are other HIIT style exercise bikes out there, which will provide comparable results if you’re willing to invest that extra time to achieve them, however the CAR.O.L. is top of the range in this category.

The CAR.O.L. bike is excellent in terms of riding experience, build quality, workout features, as well as providing that overall gym quality feeling in the comfort of your own home.

When it comes to actually purchasing a CAR.O.L. bike for yourself, you need to really ask yourself the question, will I use it?

If you’re going to use it occasionally, or in short bursts, where you ride it 4 times in a week and then leave it for 2 weeks, I would personally invest in something cheaper.

To fully maximise the benefits of this bike, it requires a commitment to regularly use, which is made easy due to time requirements or I should say lack of time requirements – after all, it is only 8 and a half minutes per workout!

The CAR.O.L. bike would appeal to anyone who wants to improve their fitness and health without having to spend hours in the gym.

Lives are busy, where we can’t always prioritise exercising, however the CAR.O.L. makes this issue a lot easier. It all depends on how much you want to get in better shape and the price you’re willing to pay to achieve this…

And if you try it and don’t like it, you’ve always got peace of mind with the CAR.O.L. 30-day return policy.
