Overview

Marketed as a new and exciting way to remove your love handles and get sexy abs and sculpt your buns. We are going to put it through its paces to see if it really can deliver or is it simply another clever marketing gimmick?

Order and delivery

Looking at this in the catalogue before ordering, I imagined it would be a lot lighter than it actually is. I was pleasantly surprised me how well this is built. It weighs in at 15kg’s and came packaged neatly in its box.

Setup of the Twist and Shape Exercise Machine

Unlike the Wondercore smart, the Twist and shape took a little longer to construct as it comes only partly assembled. It should take you around 45 minutes to put together and the instructions are well laid out and you should have no problems putting it together.

Once constructed double check all the screws are tight and there should be no loose or wobbly parts.

Initial thoughts and build quality

As mentioned above, the build quality was surprising, it actually tuned out to be a lot more smooth and stable than my initial expectations.

After stepping on for the first time there was no feeling of instability or that the twist and shape was going to topple over if at any point I lost my balance.

What is the Twist and Shape?

According to the instruction booklet it is an almost total body workout. A twisting motion specifically targets the waist, abs, buns and thighs. At the same time your upper body will be toning your chest, shoulders and arms.

After using the Twist and Shape I would say that you need to take this with a pinch of salt. Like every exercise it targets a core group of muscles as well as a secondary class. In this case I would place abs and thighs as core and chest, arms and buns as secondary.

Easy to follow manual

The Twist and Shape does a good job of helping you thought the setup and also supplied a handy DVD and wallchart (complete with food and exercise guide). It’s nice that Thane Direct (the manufacturers) have taken that extra bit of care.

In contrast we have tested some equipment that was written in half English and leaves you on your own to try and work out what you actually have to do with it.

Testing the Twist and Shape Exercise Machine

I am going to be perfectly up front with you, I wasn’t expecting much in the way of a workout. I am a fairly fit person and I always recommend pure weights as the best way to tone up and burn fat. 10 minutes on the twist and shape following some simple exercise in the booklet and I was out of breath.

I would advise following the manual and DVD as close as possible and work up to the full recommended workout time.

The Twist and Shape comes with an LCD panel as standard that give you feedback on things like time/twists/calories and more. It a little basic for 2018 and it would have been nice to have an LCD panel with a few more features. But I understand that this may have inflated the price somewhat.

Who is this for?

Much like any supplementary workout machinery you need to understand exactly what role it performs as part of your fitness requirements. I have put together a short section on why I think would suit the Twist and Shape.

The home gym user – YES

As said above, I always recommend weights as the best way to get results. A simple dumbbell setup means you have almost an infinite way to workout whatever muscle group is required. Building muscle is also one of the best ways to burn fat, the more muscle you have the more energy is required to keep them going even during rest.

However if you want to mix it up with a bit of cardio and core / lower body then I can recommend that the Twist and Shape could be a perfect match for you.

Regular gym member – NO/MAYBE

If you have regular access to a gym then you may want to skip the Twist and Shape. Gym members may still want to keep a weights bench at home, but many people tend to perform core workouts once or twice a week and you may find multiple machine at the gym will work best for you.

Elderly or recovering back to fitness – YES

Feedback from Twist and Shape users from large retailers is that people who have limited mobility or require low impact fitness see this as a real winner.

As all that is required is twisting your body from side to side you can make you workout as easy or as difficult as you like. Adding the additional moves recommended by the workout DVD could be an optional extra that you add to your routine once you have built up that core strength.

Pros

  • Solid build quality
  • Workout DVD and wallchart planner included
  • Works well as a cardio/core workout
  • Low impact workout

Cons

  • Not really a total body workout as described
  • Simple LCD feedback panel supplied

Final word

To be frank the Twist and Shape exceeded my expectations. Usually flash marketing isn’t backup with quality. It may not be the overall workout machine as described but it does target essential core muscle groups.

Following our tests over a 6 week period I was pleasantly surprised at the results and I was certainly able the finish the fitness routines from the DVD. Personally I would be adding this to my routine as a core workout and so I may skip the DVD in future but for some it offers a source of motivation.

You don’t have to take my work for it, currently has a score of 4.5/5 stars from 196 reviews on a large UK retailer.
